NCIS: Los Angeles has a hot new character coming onboard. America Olivo of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark and Bitch Slap fame debuts on the CBS hit on October 18 as Eva Espinoza, a ripped-from-the-headlines Mexican police chief.
In our exclusive Wetpaint Entertainment interview, America tells us what it’s like to work with LL Cool J, being part of the injury-plagued version of Bono’s Spider-Man on Broadway, and how she kept her cool while shooting sex scenes with for her upcoming romantic comedy. Oh, and working with The Hobbit’s Luke Evans on what may be one of the goriest horror flicks ever.
Wetpaint Entertainment: What can you tell us about your character on NCIS: Los Angeles?
America Olivio: Eva is from Mexico. She’s a very young police chief. I was told in passing on set that it was loosely based on a real circumstance where a 20 year-old woman in Mexico had to step up and be the police chief because so many of the chiefs had been murdered by the cartel that she was the only one left in the city who was willing to do it. Obviously, we’re all very concerned about what’s going on south of the border. She’s a very strong character. No matter how young she is, she’s got to be tough. What was it like working with Chris O’Donnell and LL Cool J?
Oh, my gosh. They were amazing! That whole team from crew to director to writers and every cast member there is like a family. They are so welcoming, especially walking in as a new person to this family. From the get go, five seconds in, we were already throwing banter back at each other, just busting each other’s balls right off the bat and just being really funny. From serious conversations with Todd [Smith, played by LL Cool J] to just goofing off with Chris, they were just so lovely and really stood up for me as a guest star.
