NCIS: Los Angeles executive producer Shane Brennan promises that Tuesday’s episode will reveal more about the mysterious past of Chris O’Donnell’s Agent Callen than the first two seasons combined.

“This is a moment that we’ve been planning for 50-odd episodes,” Brennan tells TVGuide.com. “In the first four or five minutes, you will learn an enormous amount of detail about who Callen is. It fills in blanks that he’s just discovered in these past few episodes, but it fills in details that go right back to when he was a child and how he ended up in the United States. It is very specific.”

Last week, Hetty (Linda Hunt) returned to the operations center after having been shot by the head of a Romanian crime family with connections to Callen’s past. She brought Callen a gift: his mother’s name. In fact, Tuesday’s episode reveals that Hetty actually knew Callen’s mom personally.

That begs the question: Will Callen be able to forgive Hetty for keeping this information from him for so long? “This goes right to the very core of [Callen and Hetty’s] relationship,” Brennan says. “It creates a very important turning point in Callen’s life.”

“Does it mean we’ll learn everything about Callen? No,” Brennan continues. Once you see the episode, you’ll realize there’s another side of him. He’s still ultimately pursuing his identity… and we’ve still got more to deliver.”

In the meantime, though, Brennan suggests that Callen — and his team — will be more stable than it has been during his recent quest for the truth. “You’ll find that Callen is a little bit more at peace with himself because of what he’s found out,” Brennan teases. “And the team is just very pleased to have him back to where he was. This is the Callen that they’ve worked with. He has resolved some of the issues that were causing him problems, and everything’s back on track.”

NCIS: Los Angeles has a hot new character coming onboard. America Olivo of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark and Bitch Slap fame debuts on the CBS hit on October 18 as Eva Espinoza, a ripped-from-the-headlines Mexican police chief.

In our exclusive Wetpaint Entertainment interview, America tells us what it’s like to work with LL Cool J, being part of the injury-plagued version of Bono’s Spider-Man on Broadway, and how she kept her cool while shooting sex scenes with for her upcoming romantic comedy. Oh, and working with The Hobbit’s Luke Evans on what may be one of the goriest horror flicks ever.

Wetpaint Entertainment: What can you tell us about your character on NCIS: Los Angeles?
America Olivio: Eva is from Mexico. She’s a very young police chief. I was told in passing on set that it was loosely based on a real circumstance where a 20 year-old woman in Mexico had to step up and be the police chief because so many of the chiefs had been murdered by the cartel that she was the only one left in the city who was willing to do it. Obviously, we’re all very concerned about what’s going on south of the border. She’s a very strong character. No matter how young she is, she’s got to be tough.

What was it like working with Chris O’Donnell and LL Cool J?
Oh, my gosh. They were amazing! That whole team from crew to director to writers and every cast member there is like a family. They are so welcoming, especially walking in as a new person to this family. From the get go, five seconds in, we were already throwing banter back at each other, just busting each other’s balls right off the bat and just being really funny. From serious conversations with Todd [Smith, played by LL Cool J] to just goofing off with Chris, they were just so lovely and really stood up for me as a guest star.

Change is coming to NCIS: Los Angeles.

In Tuesday’s episode (9/8c, CBS), Sam (LL Cool J) is tasked with finding hidden explosives before they detonate. But he won’t be working with Callen (Chris O’Donnell). Instead, he’ll head into the field with Deeks (Eric Christian Olsen).

The results? Hilarity, and possibly disaster, Olsen tells TVGuide.com. “Hunter [Claire Forlani] is the catalyst for most of the disasters early on this season,” he says. “She decides it’s in her best interest to switch up the partnering.”

Although Olsen says all of the NCIS agents are unhappy about the switch, he admits there is a lot of fun in Sam and Deeks’ odd-couple pairing. “There is a lot of gold to be mined in that new dynamic,” Olsen says. “I think Sam appreciates Deeks, but I also think he has to tolerate Deeks’ behavior.”

That behavior will be amplified thanks to some joking advice from Callen. “Callen says, ‘You should definitely take the lead and be in charge, it’s the only way Sam will respect you,'” Olsen says with a laugh. So not only is Deeks going to be Deeks, he decides that he’s definitely going to assert himself in that dynamic.”

Even so, Olsen thinks Sam will gain a new appreciation for Deeks. And he’s not ruling out the possibility that the pair will be teamed again. “There are glimpses of acceptance, and that’s all that Deeks kind of hopes for with that relationship,” Olsen says. “He’s working towards getting the respect and admiration from Sam, but think that’s a slow journey.

The more important question may be how Deeks handles being apart from Kensi (Daniela Ruah), his usual partner in crime-solving and will-they-won’t-they fan baiting. “He definitely misses her in this episode,” Olsen teases. “He kind of takes her for granted and as soon as he gets the orders to go and switch up, Deeks immediately backpedals and says how much he’d rather just go off with Kensi. There’s a dynamic that Deeks and Kensi have created for each other. When they’re not together, I definitely think that they’re drawn back to that.”

Fans can expect to see some nice Kensi and Deeks moments later this season. In fact, on the day of our interview, Olsen had just come from shooting a scene he thinks will be particularly fun for ‘shippers. “We spent the whole morning doing the waltz,” he says. “Daniela is actually a really good dancer. So she did the best that she could do to kind of carry my mediocrity.”

That said, Deeks will have his head turned by a new Latin love interest in a mid-October episode. Olsen describes the character, played by former Playboy cover girl America Olivo, as a “stone-cold fox” who will definitely put Kensi’s jealousy on high alert.

And will Olsen and Olivo also do some “waltzing”? “No,” Olsen jokes. “It’s a lot more tango than waltz.”

In an upcoming episode of Hawaii Five-0, the Five-0s will receive a visit from a familiar face to a CBS procedural drama—specifically one from NCIS: Los Angeles. Kensi (Daniela Ruah) is flying to the island to help them with something very important.

More details about H50-NCIS: LA crossover

2009 Outfest Legacy AwardsThere are now more spoilers out about what brings Kensi to Hawaii and why, in this crossover, she’s the one who’s showing up on the island. Alex O’Loughlin has explained, “Joe White flies her (Kensi) out because she’s an expert lip-reader and she helps us pull some information from footage we find of my [character’s] father, Jameson and Wo Fat. I though it was a really interesting crosspollination because we’re not from NCIS and NCIS is not Hawaii Five-0 but it worked. It’s great that we can push characters over and back, as long as we make sure that the shows stay true to what they are.”

It has been revealed that the story line with Wo Fat is going to be heating up as Larisa Oleynik’s comes to an end. Could the information that Kensi’s able to get for them by lip-reading be something that leads to the 10th episode, which is supposed to be a big one for McGarrett in terms of Wo Fat? This is something that McGarrett’s obviously very interested in finding out as much about as he can, and it looks like the reason for this crossover is a good one. They had to come up with a good reason for Kensi to leave Los Angeles behind for Hawaii for this episode, and it sounds like they’ve come up with a good one—despite the fact that NCIS: Los Angeles and Hawaii Five-0 don’t quite seem like shows that would have a crossover. An NCIS and NCIS: LA crossover does make sense—and it’s how the spinoff was introduced—but this is certainly different. However, since it’s only Kensi crossing over and not the entire LA team, it does seem much more believable.

NCIS: Los Angeles | Those who gobbled up my season preview with EP Gary Glasberg saw that at some point this winter, the show will delve into Kensi’s backstory. Will these reveals tell us a bit about how she got to be so spunky? “It definitely informs why she is who she is, and it also informs the real truth behind why she became an agent,” Glasberg told me. In a previous episode, he reminds, “We revealed that her father was murdered, so we explore that, and it is gut-wrenching and heart-wrenching.” Teases the boss, “It’ll be very interesting to see how she comes out of that [revisiting]– or whether she does.”
