Question: NCIS: LA scoop, merci beaucoup. —Amy
Ausiello: My Russian is terrible but I think you’re asking me for scoop about NCIS: LA. Well, exec producer Shane Brennan tells us that in an early Season 3 episode, “circumstances will dictate” a temporary shuffling of partners — “and they are not happy. People are like, ‘Really? I’m with him?’” Daniela Ruah, meanwhile, raves that the Sept. 20 season opener — which will play out in real time and in which “one of our favorite characters gets shot” — is “one of the fastest episodes I’ve ever read!”

We asked Daniela Ruah, twenty-seven, Portuguese-American star of NCIS: Los Angeles and the upcoming movie Red Tails, to call us over the course of three days, whenever she’d like. And she did. Which was nice of her.
Thursday, 9:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. (all times PDT).
DANIELA RUAH: You’re gonna end up being like my boyfriend. “Hey, babe. I just woke up. What are you gonna do today?” “Babe, I’m going to bed now.”
ESQUIRE: It’s the obligations of a relationship without any of the benefits.
DR: Perfect.
ESQ: How was Portugal?
DR: The country is not doing well economically. People are upset and angry. You can feel it on the street. You can tell in the way they drive. We’re talking about one of the richest histories. We had an unbelievable empire, and so many maritime discoveries, and how is it that we are now reduced to this? But I still love the country.
ESQ: Do you get recognized there?
DR: Occasionally. I started working on telenovelas there when I was sixteen, so people know me. But I’m not the “face of Portugal.”
ESQ: It’s either you or Joaquim de Almeida [Portuguese actor who played that bad guy in that movie].
DR: I think there are a couple of other actors that have Portuguese ancestry, but not many. I’ll be walking, and some kid will run right in front of me, look at my face, say “Yeah, it’s her!” and then run away. I had a four-year-old kid run up to me and wrap his arms around my neck once, and I melted.

NCIS: Los Angeles (CBS)
Premieres: Tuesday, Sept 20, 9/8c
Where We Left Off: Callen learned that Hetty’s resignation from NCIS was an effort to protect Callen from the Comescu crime family that wants him dead. In Prague, Hetty told the family that Callen was already dead, but perhaps revealed that she is connected to the Comescu family herself.
What’s Next: “What we reveal in these first four episodes is more than what we’ve revealed about Callen’s backstory in two seasons,” executive producer Shane Brennan teases, although he says the mysteries surrounding Hetty won’t be cleared up so easily. Brennan also promises that the team will swap partners later in the season, and that viewers will get some “heart-wrenching, gut-churning” stories about why Kensi became an NCIS agent

NCIS: Los Angeles: Executive producer Shane Brennan says the September 20 premiere includes a flashback to “Callen with his never-before-seen mother in a location we’ve seen before.” Brennan pre-shot a scene last year with Chris O’Donnell’s son, Finley, 5, as little Callen. “My son didn’t know what was going on at the time and neither did I,” admits Chris. “Not until I read the season-premiere script did I realize what Shane had done. It’s pretty amazing.”

NCIS: LA, please! Who’s going to get shot in the season premiere! — Danni
Oh, I’m not telling you THAT. But what I will tell you is some intel given to me by the lovely Daniela Ruah about the huge shake up caused by new operations manager Lauren Hunter. “She continues to create a little confusion by swapping the partners around a little bit. It gets us all thinking, ‘What is she doing?! What kind of control is she trying to assert over us. It’s exciting,” she says. “When I was reading the first episode of the season, which was written by [showrunner] Shane Brennan, it was like a movie script.” So who does Kensi end up with? “I’m not going to tell you who I’m partnered with! But to be working with either one of these guys … they’re so great to work with. It changes the dynamic of things and it makes it more interesting for the audience, too.”

Fans of CBS’ NCIS: Los Angeles, the defunct action-adventure series Legend of the Seeker and/or its star can file the following under “Innnteresting”: The hit procedural is keeping Bridget Regan’s guest-starring role under wraps, despite my best efforts to procure some intel.
Speaking with the usually freely teasing Shane Brennan on Wednesday night — and after only being able to get Regan’s guest gig confirmed — I asked the NCIS: LA boss to shed some light on who the brunette beauty is playing.
“I… I might hold back on that,” Brennan responded, carefully. “Only because if I get into that character, it might reveal something.”
During our full fall preview conversation, Brennan repeatedly mentioned that the first four episodes of NCIS: LA‘s new season — the first of which, TVLine just scooped, plays out in real time — will revolve around the immediate aftermath of the season finale, including Hetty’s fate and Callen’s true identity. So, can we at least assume that Regan appears somewhere during that stretch?
“She is… somewhere… in the early episodes,” Brennan allowed.
Picking up on Brennan’s staunch determination to keep Regan’s role under wraps — her character’s identity must truly be some manner of spoiler — I asked if Seeker fans might at least watch for the actress to kick some ass on the CBS crime drama, as she often did as Mother Confessor Kahlan Amnell.
“They’ll got a lot of satisfaction from what she does [on NCIS: LA],” Brennan answered. “And they’ll just have to watch to see if she gets to kick ass!
