The supersized Season 3 finale of CBS’ NCIS: Los Angeles will send Hetty to the morgue albeit without a toe tag, but nonetheless for what can be no good reason — and TVLine has a first look at the grave moment.

In this image from Part 2 of the two-hour season-ender, titled “Sans Voir” and airing May 15, Linda Hunt’s ops manager is called to the place no one ever wants to visit, in any capacity. The reason (reasons?) why, though, for now is a mystery.

Also, I spy two bodies above. When I asked NCIS: LA showrunner Shane Brennan about the season finale death that TVLine scooped earlier this year, he countered, “What makes you think that only one person dies?” He went on to say that “for fans of the show, it really is quite a surprise what we do.”

Brennan urges viewers to make a point of checking out the first promo for the finale, which will debut at the close of this Tuesday’s “Neighborhood Watch” episode (in which Deeks and Kensi pose as suburban marrieds) — saying that as revealing as it may seem, “It’s just the tip of an iceberg.”

All told, across the two-hour span, he tallied, “There are… two… three.. four, five different moments that could serve as a season finale.”

It’s always a weird thrill for viewers when characters from popular TV shows spend time in each other’s universe. It’s like, what’s Mork from Ork doing in the Cunningham’s living room on “Happy Days” asking Fonzie for dating tips? Before you can say, “Holy triple crossover,” the premise only gets funnier when Fonzie decides to have Mork try out his moves on Fonzie’s pal, Laverne, of “Laverne & Shirley.”

That programming move from the late 1970s was an example of ABC multiplatforming magic before the term even existed.

Crossovers usually happen to shine the spotlight of a hit show on a new one. But sometimes they arise out of one star’s sheer admiration of another, as when the stars of “Absolutely Fabulous” found themselves getting drunk in an episode of “Roseanne” in 1996. It was the show’s final season and Roseanne Barr was eager to produce a US version of the outrageous British series, but the closest she ever got — since the behavior of Patsy and Edina would have never gotten past prim network censors — was to have them on her show.

This week the cast of CBS procedurals “Hawaii Five-O” and “NCIS: Los Angeles” visit each other’s states to solve a crime together. Strange as it may seem for these unrelated shows to hook up, it’s not that far-fetched.

“The task force that works out of Hawaii is contemporary with the special unit that works out of LA,” says “NCIS: LA” creator Shane Brennan. “Post 9/11, there’s been a lot more cooperation and multi-jurisdictional task forces working together, so we extended that and it works in this [fictional] world.”

The investigation, which concerns someone who’s threatening to disperse a deadly virus, begins Monday night on “Five-0,” in Hawaii, before jumping to the mainland on Tuesday, where it wraps up on “NCIS: LA.”

An uncovered personal connection to the case sends “NCIS: LA” characters G. Callen (Chris O’Donnell) and Sam Hanna (LL Cool J) to Hawaii. Then, when the suspect ditches the islands for LA, they hop the red-eye home, bringing Danny Williams (Scott Caan) and Chin Ho Kelly (Daniel Dae Kim) of “Five-0” with them.

Brennan says it makes sense to split up the story up over two episodes. “They jump on the plane on Monday night and fly to LA on Tuesday, so it does have that sense of being in real-time,” he says.

While the timing was a no-brainer for each show’s show’s writing staff, capturing the established attitude and cadence of the guest stars was more complicated.

Both audiences have to say, “‘Yeah, that’s our guys!’ ” Brennan says. “They can’t walk in [to the other series] and not be the characters that fans have come to know.”

To work around that, the two series asked their writers to do a little crossover of their own — “riding shotgun” and getting writing credits on each other’s series.

“To keep it true to those characters [who crossed over],” Brennan adds, the two shows also “broke the stories, outlined and worked on the scripts together.”

The only thing that nearly got lost in translation between the shows was wardrobe.

“At one point, Callen and Sam were going to be [wearing] Hawaiian shirts,” Brennan recalls with a chuckle. “I said, ‘No, I don’t think that’s going to work for our audience.’ ”

While the crossover could turn into a ratings bonanza — they’re two of CBS’ most-popular dramas — Brennan says that the shows did it purely to entertain fans.

“They’re going to sit back and say, ‘That was fun, that’s was different, that was great to watch,” he says. “If our numbers go up and ‘Five-0’s’ go up, that’s a great thing, too.”

NCIS: Los Angeles | In the two-night crossover event kicking off this Monday on Hawaii Five-0 and concluding Tuesday on NCIS: LA, Callen and Sam will collaborate on a case with Five-0 task force members Danny and Chin Ho (played by Scott Caan and Daniel Dae Kim) – but don’t be surprised if Kensi also gets in on the action. And then some. “There’s definitely a lot of banter between everyone, and a little flirtation here and there — maybe even creating a little jealousy on behalf of Deeks,” NCIS: LA‘s Daniela Ruah tells me. Since Chin Ho is newly re-wed, shall we assume that it’s Danny who takes a shine to Ms. Blye’s considerable assets?

On the NCIS: Los Angeles set this March day, there’s even more bull in the bullpen than usual. The number of buff leading men wearing too-tight shirts has suddenly doubled, and so has the quick-fire banter.

Several of the law enforcers on hand need to be inoculated against smallpox, since their mission is to bring down a madman intent on infecting the population with the virus. “I’m not a big fan of needles,” squeaks Eric Christian Olsen, as Deeks. “I’ll buy you ice cream if you don’t cry,” promises Kensi (Daniela Ruah). Linda Hunt, aka Hetty, plays the straight woman, telling Deeks: “You might feel a little prick.” “Probably not his first time,” adds Scott Caan, who plays Det. Danny Williams.

Say aloha to the enchanted land of crossover TV. The two-parter begins on Monday’s Hawaii Five-0 with Callen (Chris O’Donnell) and Sam (LL Cool J) heading to Hawaii to help track down the smallpox terrorist — who just may be someone from Callen’s past. The action continues the following night on NCIS: Los Angeles, when Danny and Chin Ho (Daniel Dae Kim) visit their Navy-investigator comrades on the mainland. “It’s an alliance,” says LL Cool J. “You have these two crack teams that have to stop this guy before he hurts innocent people. Sometimes the job is too big for one crew.”

NCIS: L.A. creator Shane Brennan can relate. “Crossovers are not easy to pull off when you’re working in the same town,” he says, “and when you’ve got the other show being shot a five-hour flight away, it’s particularly challenging.”

To make things more complicated, Part 2 of the crossover — the NCIS: L.A. episode — was not only shot first, but before the actors even had the Hawaii Five-0 script that sets up the story. “It was a little bit backward way of doing things,” says O’Donnell. Adds LL Cool J: “We shoot out of sequence so much anyway that it’s about imagination. That’s just part of what we do as actors. Sometimes we have to play an NBA championship with no basketball.”

The instant camaraderie between the casts helped make filming easier. “Daniel and Scott fit right in here,” says O’Donnell. “It is funny for me seeing unfamiliar faces in this room, because this is the first episode where anyone had special permission to come inside the ops center.” Guest stars haven’t previously been allowed any closer to the series’ super-secret, Spanish-tiled HQ than the boat shed, but then, other guest stars don’t draw 10 million viewers a week, which truly merits a special hall pass. “And for us, it’s strange to go to Hawaii and be playing the same characters, but the crew is completely different,” O’Donnell adds. “It’s kind of bizarro world.”

Caan agrees. “There are parts of doing this [crossover] that are weird,” he says. “There are writers on our show who have written 40-something episodes, so they know my thing or Daniel’s thing. And then we’re gonna tell the NCIS: L.A. writers, ‘Here, you give it a shot’? You can be skeptical about that. But I think it worked out really well. And when you’re working with the same people over and over again, it is fun to work with new people — and having them be LL Cool J and Chris just makes it better.”

One of those guys, in particular, made it better for Caan. “I don’t want to take anything away from Chris, but LL Cool J is definitely somebody I’ve been paying attention to for more than half my life,” says Caan. “I grew up listening to hip-hop music. We had a bunch of long conversations, and he’s a really smart cat. Within two weeks, he changed my mind about a lot of important things, and I’m pretty stubborn.” Caan doesn’t want to get into specifics, but he alludes to LL Cool J’s emphasizing a balance between perfectionism and just getting the job done that struck a chord with his work psyche. Says Caan: “He definitely has a leadership thing down.”

While Brennan admits the idea for the crossover episodes came from CBS brass, this seeming shotgun wedding didn’t actually take place at gunpoint. “There’s no edict from on high,” he says. “They said, ‘What do you think of the idea?’ And [Five-0 executive producer] Peter Lenkov and I said it was a great one.”

“For me as a musician, it’s like two bands going out on tour,” says LL Cool J on why he liked the idea. “You know, no reason not to do it. It’s just a better experience for the people who buy a ticket. And I don’t think it’s going to hurt either show.”
