NCIS: Los Angeles | Finally, a bit more insight into the coming season’s Episode 2, which show boss Shane Brennan has promised will be “hilarious.” Up ’til now, all we had was this exclusive photo from Deeks’ vacation — but then we spoke to Barrett Foa and Renee Felice Smith (aka Eric and Nell) about what’s ahead for the CBS procedural. “The second episode is a big one for us,” said Foa. “There’s some steamy stuff going on.” “Relationship-wise for our characters,” Smith added. OK, but what about the “funny” business beyond any such funny business? “I have a fun scene with Linda Hunt where Hetty is coming down hard on Nell,” Smith shared. “She gives me a task based on my IQ. ” Foa, meanwhile, says Eric will be left to “give a lecture to [Granger, played by] Miguel Ferrer about nuclear physics, basically trying to stall him. Hilarity ensues!” There’s that H-word again!

Question: Whats the buzz on the second episode of Season 4 of NCIS: LA? Did Deeks and Kensi go on vacation together? —Monica
Ausiello:
From the looks of the exclusive photo below from Deeks’ trip, it appears he was traveling solo (unless, of course, his partner was the one snapping the pic). Regardless, exec producer Shane Brennan predicts that the Oct. 2 episode — which will reveal what the entire gang did during their time off — “will instantly go on to everyone’s favorite list!”

NCIS: LA | Leading off with a dip into the reader mailbag, Laura wants to know if there’s any “Densi” goodness coming up in Season 4. The good news: There is. The better news: You won’t have to wait long for it. Coming off the super-intense season opener (airing Sept. 25), Episode 2 will deliver what Shane Brennan is calling “the funniest episode we ever made.” The show boss is mum on why exactly the outing’s a riot, but says, “The Kensi-Deeks fans are going to love it. It has a lot of fun in it. [At the table read] everyone was rolling around on the floor laughing.” Brennan gives proper due to the interplay between Daniela Ruah and Eric Christian Olsen. “You can write the material, but unless there’s chemistry… it can just lay there very flat,” he explains. “But we have a cast that’s very good with humor.”

Can you tell me anything about the next season of NCIS: Los Angeles? — Nick
ADAM:
If you’re tired of always exploring Callen’s back story, know this: Season 4 will put LL Cool J’s Sam Hanna in the spotlight. “We’ve come up with a really clever story line,” executive producer Shane Brennan tells us. “It’s very emotional and plays out over a number of episodes and reveals a lot about who Sam is.” Just how much might we learn? Like the similarly titled episodes that downloaded tons of intel about Callen, Hetty and Kensi, Season 4 will feature an hour titled “Hanna, S.”

I was left hugely disappointed by this week’s NCIS: LA. Got anything that might cheer me up? — Amy
Look at this and tell me if you’re seriously still bummed/not totally bursting with excitement about the finale. If you are, I owe you a Coke (and vice versa — what do you think I am, some sort of soda fairy?) Shall I give you my address now or later?

Executive producer Shane Brennan also talks to THR about the eventful two-night crossover with “Hawaii Five-0.”

“Brazen is a very good way to describe the actions of the bad guy [The Chameleon],” Brennan shared with The Hollywood Reporter.

There are several pivotal moments during the two-hour third season closer that viewers should pay particular attention to, according to the NCIS franchise veteran. One of them can be seen in the promo that will air following Tuesday’s episode.

“We’ll see Hetty (Linda Hunt) in a morgue,” teased Brennan without much elaboration. “She’s astonishing in that scene. That scene is worth the price of admission, as they say.”

Another key development that takes place is more for the adrenaline junkies. There is “an explosion,” Brennan says. “I want people to know that.”

With no real CGI touch-ups or “any foibles” added, the EP revealed that to make the scene happen, the crew employed ten cameras to capture the mayhem: “You will hit the rewind button on the DVR and say, ‘I need to see that again’.”

Last week’s Hawaii Five-0 (10.9 million)/NCIS: LA (15.2 million) crossover drew eyeballs and reaction has been positive.

“I know we’re really happy with the numbers we got overnight, but I’ve been too busy to go on the forums and look [at people’s reactions],” Brennan says. “The general feeling from people is that everyone enjoyed it, particularly having the Hawaii Five-0 guys come to us.”

With the success of the two-night event, the potential for more crossovers in the future is something Brennan is open to.

“It is something that I believe is very contemporary,” he says. “I think the audiences are willing to accept crossovers when both shows operate in the same world and that was certainly the case with NCIS and Hawaii Five-0. Having them overlap in terms of crimes was very easy for us to do. Whether or not we’ll do more is up to CBS. It’s something I’d be very happy to do again.”

NCIS: LA airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on CBS.
